Great Gatsby

Chapter 7

Gatsby’s party came to an end. Nick learned that Gatsby ended the parties because he no longer needed them to attract Daisy. Daisy invited Nick and Gatsby to lunch with her, Tom, and Jordan. At one point, while Tom was out of the room, Daisy kissed Gatsby on the lips and said about her love. But the next instant the nurse leaded in her young daughter, Pammy. Daisy basically ignored the child, but Gatsby kept glancing at the little girl in surprise. The lunch was awkward, at least in part because of the intense heat. At one point Daisy asked what they should do with the rest of the day and the next thirty years of their lives. She wanted them all to go to the city. Tom recognized that Daisy and Gatsby were in love. He suddenly agreed that they should all go to the city. Tom insisted on driving Gatsby’s big yellow car. Gatsby and Daisy traveled alone in Tom’s coupe, while Tom drove Nick and Jordan. Tom pulled in the Valley of Ashes. They stop for gas at Wilson's garage. Wilson told them that he decided to move his wife out west, since he recently learned that she's been having an affair. Upon leaving the garage, they saw Myrtle peering down at the car from her window. She stared at Jordan with an expression of jealous terror, since she assumed that Jordan is Tom's wife.
Feeling that both his wife and mistress were slipping away from him, Tom became panicked and impatient. The group took a suite at hotel. Tom regarded Daisy's affair with the lower-class Gatsby as one of the harbingers of the decline of civilization. Gatsby told Tom that Daisy didn’t love him. Daisy sided with Tom, and refused Gatsby when he pleaded her to say about their love.
Nick, Jordan and Tom found out that someone had been struck and killed by an automobile. The young Greek told them that the victim was Myrtle Wilson. She ran out into the road during a fight with her husband; there, she was struck by an opulent yellow car. Nick realized that the fatal car must have been Gatsby's auto. Tom presumed that Gatsby was the driver.
